it was a canary, then it was a small green parakeet, then it was nothing. the door was left open one morning because someone meant to come back and clean. they did not come back to clean and the bird did not come back to the cage.
the perch is still oriented across the centre. a strip of cuttlebone is fixed to the bars by a clip nobody has touched. on the tray, a single tail-feather, faded almost to paper.
the cage stands by the window in case. nobody says in case of what.
field-note: the cage door does not creak. it has been open longer than it was ever shut.
