the corridor hare

lepus longissimus · order vestibulia

the corridor hare runs the full length of any corridor at dawn, passing the threshold of one room and the threshold of the next at the same instant. it has been clocked at speeds approaching the corridor itself.

it is not so much fast as continuous. between sleep and the moment of waking, when the corridor straightens itself imperceptibly, the hare passes. you will know it by the slight sound of paw on linoleum and by the brief disagreement of two doors at either end.

it does not stop. it has never been known to enter a room. it is rumoured — though this is uncertain — that the corridor hare is the corridor's own way of stretching, once a day, between four a.m. and the first light.
