a tone you feel in the chest before you hear it. the stone of the tower drinks half the sound; what comes down through the ladders is the lower half, deep enough to settle dust. it is rung four times in a year, and once in error.
the master rings it; nobody else is permitted on the rope. the stop is a leather glove kept on a hook above the wheel — when the glove is on the hook, the bell will not be rung. there is no other rule about it that anyone has written down.
