a brace and bit

a slow drill turned by hand: the sweep describes a small private moon, and at its centre a screw enters wood by the patience of the body. one full circle is one small word; whole sentences live below.

the bit thirsts downward and clears its own throat: a curl of oak rises from the hole, more like a flower than a shaving. the man who last set it kept his bits in a leather roll by the bench, in sizes named by the number of sixteenths they would eat.

field-note · count the turns: each is a little sigh. the wood will say when it is done.
