two cast steel bars threaded for a wooden screw apiece, with soft scraps of cork inside the jaws so they do not mark a finished edge. they hold without speaking — the slow, opinionated embrace of a thing that has agreed to be still.
on the bench they keep the hide-glued boards from arguing while they think. the back clamp is older, by the look of the rust; the front one was bought to match. when both are in use a piece is overheard at absolute attention, and you must walk past it without bumping the bench.
