you find yourself at the kitchen table. on the table is a letter. it is addressed to you in handwriting that you recognise without being able to name. the stamp is from a country you have not lived in. it has been there, you understand, since you arrived in the dream, possibly longer.
you reach for it. your hand reaches; the letter is suddenly a little further. you pick it up. the paper inside is heavier than paper. you think about the person who wrote it: the small intentions, the chosen words, the placing of the stamp very carefully in the corner. you know, looking at the seal, that you have already opened it once, in a different dream, and that you cannot remember what it said. you understand that the not-remembering is precisely what brought it back.
you put it down. you decide, very carefully, that you will read it in a moment. the kettle is also somewhere, on a small flame, in another kitchen. the lamp warms the seal. it would only take a small movement. you do not make it. you understand that some letters are unread the way some doors are unopened. there is the telephone in the next room, also.
