a return to school

you find yourself in the corridor of a school. you cannot tell if it is the school you went to. the floor is the right floor. the lockers are the wrong lockers. you are the age you are now, but you are also expected.

a bell has rung, or is about to ring. you cannot remember which class you have, but you know its room number, and you know the room number is on a floor that was not there before. you carry a satchel. the satchel is empty in a way that suggests you have forgotten something specific. a teacher passes; you do not recognise her face but she nods to you as if she has been waiting for you to arrive. the other children are smaller than children are in life. they do not look up.

you remember now: there was an examination, and you did not study. you understand, walking, that this is something the mind does when it cannot forget. you are looking for the room, and you are also already inside it.
