a homemade frame

corrugated card · cobalt poster paint · refrigerator door

cut from the side of a packing box with scissors not quite sharp enough, painted with cobalt poster paint by the same child who drew the picture inside. dried flat on yesterday's newspaper. the paint, in two corners, has gone down the edge of the card and made small unintentional drips, which have themselves dried.

the picture is what the child believes a house looks like: red walls, a triangular roof, a window, a tree, a sun in the upper corner. it is, to some degree, a picture of this house; it is also, to a larger degree, a picture of the idea of houses. the child is now an adult and lives somewhere else.

it is held to the refrigerator door by two magnets, one shaped like a bee and one shaped like a strawberry, both faded. it has been there for nineteen years.

field-note this is the only frame in the house that anyone living in the house has actually made. all the others are inherited.
