specimen on stone
no. 15 · h-coll.
a soft, dense moss the colour of old peas, persistent on anything dark and flat that retains rain. found across the upper faces of the stones in the lower yard, the long path between the forest and the gate, and on the seat of one bench from which no one removes it.
holds the carved letter open. unties the carved letter slowly. tolerated by memory, encouraged by rain, ignored by footsteps. kin to the green at the edge of the well and the velvet over the threshold of the stone on the path. older than most things it grows on.
field note — i sat on the bench. the moss was warmer than the air around it. i do not know why.
