counting book · the second copy · the first is missing
twelve pages. on each page, one small thing: a
coin, a feather,
a thimble, a piece of string, a
key too small for any door, a
stone from a beach you have not been to.
one sentence describes each. the sentences are very short.
the book teaches counting only as an excuse. what it is really
teaching is the manner of paying attention to one thing at a
time. children read it once and then return to particular
pages alone. the library has been
asked to keep it on the lowest shelf, where small visitors can
reach it themselves.
marginalia · pencil, very small i counted them. there are thirteen. one is hidden in the page about the feather. i won't say where.
