— light · kitchen yellow

the kitchen yellow

when: evening, after supper· where: above the table· colour temp: 2400 K

one bulb, sixty watts, hung at the end of its cord. the kitchen yellow is what it makes of the room. it is not warm in the way a chapel amber is warm — it has no ceremony — it is the warmth of a thing that has been left on because someone is still up.

it reveals the bread board, the rim of the cup, the corner of the newspaper. it puts a small honey on the wood of the kitchen table. it shows you your own hands. it agrees, generously, that you are still here.

it hides the dishes in the sink, the time, the rest of the house. beyond the cone it is winter or whatever else; inside the cone it is supper, still, and the kettle quietly cooling.

field note · one occupant i learned to read by this light, and to wait, and to stop waiting. the bulb has been changed four times in twenty years. the yellow has not changed. i suspect the yellow is in the room itself, and that the bulb only confirms it. compare hornlight.
