the summer green

when: late afternoon, july· where: under the trees· colour temp: 5400 K (filtered)

the summer green is the light that has come through the leaves. it has been corrected. it has lost the part of itself that the leaves needed, and what comes through is what was left over for you. it lands in small coins on the path.

it reveals the moss on the north side of the forest stone, the underside of a wing, the freckle of your own forearm. it has nothing to do with heat — heat has its own opinions — it has only to do with the colour of being alive in a small green room with no walls.

it hides the sky. it hides the actual hour. you do not know whether it is three or six, and you do not need to. compare winter white, which is the light's other kind of lie. see the garden.

field note · g.w., august i counted forty-eight coins of summer green on a metre of path between the hedge and the well. one was on the back of my hand and shifted when i moved. it did not appear that any one of them had any opinion about the others. see garden walk.
