a small screw-jack

a fat iron acorn with a coarse brass thread inside it, and a bar through its waist. each turn of the bar lifts the world by the depth of one thread. you can raise a whole corner of a house with it, slowly enough that the house does not notice.

the principle is the principle of patience: small motions, repeated, accumulate into a fact. you would not choose a screw-jack to lift a feather, but for a stone it is the only tool that lets you keep your back.

field-note · once it is loaded, do not stop turning. let it down by the same hand that lifted it.
