two is the smallest plural. it is also the smallest argument. doors come in pairs; landings do not. shoes, hands, eyes — most of the doubles in the building came with the body.
two creates a between. you cannot have a bridge without two shores, or a mirror without a face and a reflection, or a whisper without one to speak and one to listen. two is what makes one notice it is not alone.
look at the figure 2 long enough and it begins to bow. a second 2 will not balance it; it doubles the bowing. somewhere here is a room with exactly two chairs and one table, kept ready for nobody.
