palimpsest

— overwritten · imperfectly erased —

a page bears the marks of what was written before it. memory is one. so is the basement wall, on which several generations of writers have begun to leave their initials.

this page bears, currently, a list of words: sometemple, sometemple, sometemple. each one written over a list of numbers, which was written over a list of corrections, which was written over a blank page.

a palimpsest is a slow kind of forgetting. it does not erase; it overwrites. some of the earlier text always remains visible. sometimes, the earlier text is the more important one.
