ink wash · march · sketchbook p. 08
the grandfather kettle, still in service, sketched while it was on the boil. enamel-blue in life; here, only ink and water. it has outlived three stoves and will outlive this one. the spout points left because the cupboard hinges open to the right.
drawn quickly because the kettle was warning and one cannot let a kettle warn for long. the ink wash for the shadow was laid down first, the line drawn over it once the page had dried. the steam refused, twice — I gave it up as a single curl and lied about the rest.
what is wrong is the spout. it pours straight onto the page. in life the spout pours forward, into the cup; here it pours sideways, into the margin, and would soak the field-note if it were real water.
