the morning star

logged at five forty-eight, east, low — the morning star. taken at first for jupiter, owing to brightness; the entry has been corrected on the next morning's check. it was venus, coming round to her morning side after the long inferior passage. she will sit there for some months now and be the brightest thing east before the sun.

the same planet seen the other half of its year. one tends to forget, between turns, that this happens. the morning version is colder. the air at dawn keeps a different silence than the air at dusk. the witness writes "evening star" in the day-book and then crosses it out, twice, the second time with feeling.
