not a colour exactly. a state. what light becomes when it has had to
travel through something. the kitchen after a long meal. fog seen
from the inside.
smoke is the colour of any room where someone has lived for a long time
and not opened the windows. you find it on the ceiling above the
candle, on the upper edge of the mist coming off the river, on the
thin clouds at four am when the streetlamp has nothing to do.
a grey that has somewhere to go. neither pearl nor slate. a moving
grey, an arriving grey, a leaving grey.
