painted four times: pale rose, then green, then cream, then this bone-white that the building has settled on. each layer is still under there, the way a thought you decided against is still under the one you used.
it has been scuffed by every shoe that ever paused at the threshold of the parlour. dust collects where the ogee meets the upper edge; the custodian runs a thumb along it at nine and sometimes again at four.
