a tea-bell

the size of a small pear. silver cup, ivory handle, the monogram e.r. on the curve. it sits on the doily on the tray with the cups, where it has been sitting since the tray became this tray.

it has never been rung. it was a wedding present from an aunt who did not know the couple kept no servant. picking it up makes the tongue knock once against the side, and that is the only sound it has ever made. nothing stops it because nothing starts it.

field-note · the doily is in worse condition than the bell. the doily is older. the doily was made by hand.
