brown paper · the day after · left at your door
more roses than were necessary. a pink so pale it is almost not pink. paper wrap, taped at one corner because the shop ran out of string. the card was left blank and then signed after.
it was set on the mat outside the door before eight and the bell rung once. nobody waited. by the time it was brought in, the wrap was already damp at the bottom. see also the late letter, small regret, the threshold.
it now stands on the kitchen counter, paper unfolded but not removed, waiting for a vase. the question of whether it succeeds is a question for tomorrow.
field-note — too many flowers can be its own kind of saying-too-much. one rose is sometimes the right answer. you will not be the one to send the right answer this time.
