a miner's lamp

brass body, gauze chimney. it has been down where the air is jealous: the flame learnt to bend when the air had a complaint and to stand straight when the air was honest.

a worker carried it; the worker had a name once that nobody at the museum kept. the soot on the gauze is the worker's soot. it lights now from a small electric fiction.

field-note · the flame draws sideways when the museum door is opened.
