printed in a country that issues its own paper money, its own time, and its own stamps; never gummed, because the country prefers letters that are never sent. it lives in a glassine envelope marked not for use.

the portrait is no one in particular — a face the engraver gave to several denominations. the smaller stamps wear the same face, politely younger.
