cabinet of curiosities · case no. 09

a geode, split

from outside, a heavy and uneventful stone. struck across the middle by a hammer (in 1908, by a curator's nephew), it opened on a small violet city. amethyst, all of it self-organised, dim and exact, that no one was meant to see.

both halves were kept, set on a small bed of black felt with a finger's-width between. they have not been closed since. it is the cabinet's argument for the secret: that the interior of a thing may rhyme with nothing on its surface.

field-note · the nephew was unrepentant, the curator pleased.
