five-armed, brittle, faintly orange where the sun does not reach the vitrine. one arm has regrown shorter than the others; the curator finds this the most interesting fact of the object — that the starfish had, at some past tide, already mended itself.
it sits beside the nautilus in the sea-quarter of the cabinet. they share, between them, the only patient mathematics on display.
