— def · antemerid

antemerid

/ˌæn.tɪˈmɛr.ɪd/

noun · etym: noemic-latinate · ante- (before) + -merid (midday, by extension: action of the day) · cf. ante meridiem

the long pause between waking and getting up.

the antemerid is not yet the day, no longer the night. one is conscious and horizontal. the ceiling is examined; the day to come is rehearsed and then revised; one resolves, briefly, to get up; one revises this also. the adundas is a frequent visitor in the antemerid.

in older usage the antemerid was held in respect — a small private cloister between sleep and the body's reluctant employment. visitors of the sleeptide often pass through the antemerid on their way out of it, though the boundary between the two is not always agreed.

in a sentence:   "a long antemerid this morning; the kettle had to be lit twice."
