palinodic

/ˌpæl.ɪˈnəʊ.dɪk/

adjective · etym: noemic-greek · palin- (again) + -odic (sung, said) · cf. palinode (a poem retracting an earlier poem)

having the quality of being said for the second time.

any sentence can be palinodic. it requires no particular content, only that the speaker has already arrived at it once. the marginal rereading of one's own diary is a palinodic act; so is the third "good morning" from a neighbour one sees daily. — so is the third "good morning" from a neighbour one sees daily.

the palinodic mode carries faint regret without bitterness. it admits that the present is repetition without complaining of the fact. compare the ritual wing, where repetition is a virtue, and the paginated account of days, where it is a method of measure.

in a sentence:   "his greeting was palinodic; we have not had a new conversation since february."
