seeds

paper envelopes, folded and sealed by the same hand. the labels are in pencil; some have a year, some are too old to have bothered. the seeds inside rattle softly when the drawer moves.

they will, most of them, no longer germinate. there is no plan to plant them. they are the record of a different garden, kept against a possible different year.

field-note: poppies from the year of the long summer. they would still grow.
