an embroidered initial

a single letter, four inches tall, worked in red silk on a square of household linen. it was meant to be the corner of a sheet; the sheet did not survive. what survives is the letter, removed and pressed flat behind glass, in the manner of a pinned moth.

it is somebody's initial. it is not yours, and that is the point of an initial — it is always someone else's, even when it isn't. consider the napkin in the linen press and the monogram folded twice toward the wall.

field-note: the under-thread has bled into the linen on the reverse, the way grief does, where it is not seen.
