medium · second floor · last known use unknown
the four walls are unbroken plaster, lime-washed at some point in a colour that is now closer to grey than to white. there is a single bulb on a short cord. the floor is laid in narrow oak. the door, which is on the south wall, opens inwards.
there is no aperture for daylight. there is no fireplace, no vent, no second door, no fitted cupboard. the air is the same temperature as the corridor outside. the bulb is on a switch by the door and stays on if asked.
the keeper supposes the room was meant to hold something one did not want changed by light — paintings, possibly, or a kind of sleep. the keeper concedes both guesses are guesses.
field-note: the bulb has not been replaced in the keeper's memory. it has not gone out either.
