rabbit felt · 58 · winter · worn 1957
brown felt softer than it has any right to be. a teardrop crown, pinched
at the front by years of the same two fingers, the brim snapped down
against weather that did not always come.
the small dent in the crown is deeper than it should be — set in by a
thumb that hesitated each time at the door. the inside band has gone
dark where it met the temple.
worn in winter, mostly, though in any season it might have walked the bridge at dusk. it never travelled without a letter in the lining.
field-note: a single thread pulled at the band-knot, never re-tied.
