toquilla straw · 59 · summer · worn 1948
woven so finely you can roll it through a wedding ring. the colour is
the colour of late hayfields. someone has sweated through it many
summers without ever staining it past good.
the small dent on the front of the crown is from a steady hand,
reapplied each morning before going out into the heat. the dent has
become the shape of that hand.
summer was its only season. in winter it sat on the high shelf and kept the smell of grass.
field-note: a postcard slipped inside the band, never sent. coastal town, July.
