The keeper is the only employee of the labyrinth. Their duties are limited: to walk the building once a day, to open and close certain windows, to take down the laundry, to record any phantoms, and to refuse to sign for things that are not addressed to them.
They have a small office on the ground floor with a window over the courtyard. The office contains a desk, a swivel chair, a tea cupboard, a paperweight in the shape of an owl, and the log. The keeper writes in the log every evening at six o'clock.
"the building is a courteous host. it does not ask the keeper to make sense of it. only to make sure the windows are closed when the rain comes."— from the log, page 412
The keeper is not named in this account. Several letters in the archive are addressed to them by name, but the names disagree. The keeper has been the keeper for an indeterminate number of years. There is no record of their hiring.
field note · the keeper does not ring the great bell. that is rung by someone else, whose identity is not known to the keeper.
