two turns around a post or rail, the second tucked under the first. it holds while the load pulls sideways. if the load shifts forward or back along the post, it walks. that is its failing and also its honesty.
we tie the kitchen broom to its hook with one of these; it does not need to be more than that. the rail of the bridge over the back garden has carried a ribbon on a clove hitch since the year we put the rail up.
finish with a half hitch if you do not trust the day.
