lashing

not a single knot but a small structure of knots. a clove hitch to start; wraps round both sticks, drawn tight; frapping turns between the sticks, pulling the wraps against each other; and a clove hitch to end. when you are done, two sticks behave as one.

we lashed the trellis in the garden this way because the wood was scrap and we had no nails the right size; it has held nine seasons. the old broom in the kitchen keeps its head on a square lashing. children make tripods on the beach in summer with three sticks and a length of twine and an afternoon.

keep the wraps tight, and keep them touching. a loose lashing is worse than no lashing — it pretends to hold.

— if your hands hurt after, you did it right.
