sir or madam —
i write to inform that the ferry will not run on the days the wind comes from the north. the timetable continues to insist it does. the timetable, with respect, has been wrong for some years.
also: the bridge at low tide is not, despite what the visitors say, faster. it is shorter and longer at once. this is a thing about the place.
i have left a lamp for you in the harbour office. it burns until about four. after that, you will need your own light.
yours,
— the ferryman
a working letter, more bulletin than note. the ferryman writes as he speaks: in instructions. he is rarely seen on land. one wonders to whom he is addressing the second person.
