fog again, fourth day

a low cloud has settled on the harbour without seeming to have arrived. the bell at the light has been struck hourly since tuesday and is expected to continue.

filed from the seafront · by m. coren, staff

the fog returned overnight and is now held by the houses along the lower road. visitors report that the bell at the light is audible from inland places where it is not usually audible, and that the air smells faintly of wet rope. the office of the harbour has not, at the time of writing, declared anything formal.

residents of the upper streets, where the air is thinner, describe a kind of grey shoulder pressed against their windows. the morning ferry did not run; the afternoon one is uncertain. children kept indoors are said to be quieter than usual, which is itself a kind of news.

the custodian of the lower buildings, asked for comment on the foghorn schedule, said only that the bell would continue to be rung "until it isn't necessary," and returned to oiling a hinge. the mist that preceded this fog is now thought to have arrived on monday, though no one took the trouble to record it.
