street · the hatter's

l. orloff & sons · hatters · est. 1862

a hatter's window

orloff measures heads by hand, with the same battered tape since the war. he does not write the numbers down. he says he remembers every skull he has ever held, and most of them have grown only a little.

the homburg in the centre belongs to a man who has not collected it for six years. orloff keeps it brushed. the sons, both gone abroad, send back hat shapes nobody wears in the city.

field-note: the top hat in the corner is for stage use. the dust on it is theatrical, not real. haberdasher · tobacconist · a glove · a feather · a pressed flower
