a stationer's window

laid paper, wove paper, paper that holds a fold for years. wexford the elder is dead; wexford the younger writes the price-tags by hand because the customers can tell. the engraver's plate behind the counter has not been recut since 1908.

the ledger in the corner of the window is a sample, not a sale; he refuses to part with it. the quill is for show, like the inkwell, like the cat that lives on the back-shelf. the pencils, however, will sharpen.
