b. nyiri

nyiri keeps four clocks in the window and one behind a curtain. the curtained one is set six minutes ahead, for departures. those who know to ask are shown it. those who do not are not poorer for the lack.

he came north from a town whose church bell he replaced as a boy. he says he can tell which bell is which by the air it parts. the sign was hung by a friend whose hands were steadier than his own already were.

field-note: the second hand on the disc is painted, not running. nothing on a sign needs to keep time.
