v. solomonsen

he sets stones into rings under a single low-watt lamp, with two of the four corners of the bench cleared in case a customer wishes to lay something down. he prefers the older settings, the ones with claws. he says the modern setting does not believe in falling.

the gem painted on the sign is no stone you can name. solomonsen designed it himself and the painter, unaccountably, got it right. ask him for it and he will look up, kindly, and tell you it is not for sale, never has been, never could be.

field-note: the lamp inside is amber-warm and never the same colour as the gem.
