saturn in the 8-inch at two-fifty: a small pale globe with a thin gold hoop tilted at twenty-two degrees, the southern face shown to us. the cassini division was visible only as a feeling, a darkening between two paler areas that the eye supplied as a line. titan stood off east, a discreet grain of yellow light.

at this magnification atmospheric tremor moves the planet like a thing trying to be very still in cold water. one bears with it. the planet improves between gusts. the rings were sharper at minute thirty than at minute three. patience is the instrument the instruments do not list.
