manual · 1986 · the watchmaker's bench
its dial is missing on purpose. you can watch the clockworks argue politely with themselves, the balance ticking through its small fit four times every second, the gears resigned to their share of the work.
it was made by a watchmaker who wanted to see what he was doing, and worn by his apprentice for thirty years afterwards as a kind of moving signature. it keeps perfect time and there is nowhere for it to hide its mistakes; there have been no mistakes.
field-note · in good light you can see the screw beside the balance has been turned by hand, not a driver. someone cared.
