a curious egg

pale, speckled, perhaps too speckled. larger than a chicken's, smaller than a goose's. nobody has held it to a candle, on the principle that some questions are better unposed. the cup beneath it is lacquered black.

it is the cabinet's least settled object. the placard reads only egg and is, beneath, a smudged date. the curator sometimes moves it a hand's breadth to one side, because the egg gives the faint impression of having shifted overnight on its own. see the skeleton, which it possibly remembers.
