deep blue wallpaper

the wallpaper is a deep blue with a faint damask figure repeating itself in a slightly paler blue, almost silver where the light is right. it covers four walls without seam visible, and goes up to a picture-rail of darker stained pine. the floor is wide oak waxed many times.

there is no furniture. there are two rectangles on the longest wall where pictures hung — one rectangle smaller than a postcard, the other the size of a face. one brass tack remains in the wall, between them, holding nothing.

the keeper supposes it was a sitting room, or possibly a small parlour for receiving people one did not know well. the colour suggests a household that wanted to seem older than it was. field-note: in candlelight the silver in the damask moves the wrong way as you walk.
