a west-corner room

the room is at the western corner of the ground floor and gets the slant of late light through a window set high in the outer wall. the floor is wide-plank fir, dark with whatever wax it was finished with the first time. there is nothing in the room at present, not even a hook for a coat.

there is no chair, no rug, no skirting-line where furniture once stood. the walls do not show the squares of removed pictures. the keeper has looked twice and cannot remember the room ever being otherwise.

the keeper supposes it was a room for waiting in — for someone arriving by the western door, which is now bricked. nothing in the log corroborates this. field-note: at four in the afternoon a band of warm light reaches almost to the inner door, then withdraws very slowly.
