the bookcase stands against the long wall and reaches almost to the picture-rail. it is plain pine that has been painted over once in pale yellow and not very evenly. the shelves are four. the back is the colour of the room behind it, slightly darker.
there are no books. there is no ladder, no chair beside it, no slip of paper marking the place anyone was last reading. on the upper shelf a faint rectangle remains where a single small volume sat long enough to print itself against the wood.
the keeper supposes the room was once a private library. there is no library in any plan of the building and the bookcase, on closer inspection, has been built into the wall and cannot be moved.
field-note: the ghost on the top shelf is the size of a child's reader, not a grown-up book.
