three chairs

they are plain country chairs of dark oak, the sort sold in dozens to schoolrooms a long while ago. one has the back faintly waxed where a head has leaned. another has a leg shorter by the width of a coin. the third is upright and clean.

there is no fourth chair. there is no table, no lamp, no hook, no rug. the chairs do not face each other; they face nothing in particular. they are not in a row.

the keeper supposes the room was used for waiting in by three people who did not know each other, perhaps to be called one at a time into another room which no longer opens onto this one. it is a guess and the keeper says so. field-note: the dust on each chair is even. no chair has been sat in more recently than any other.
