the table is round and the colour of old beech. it stands in the middle of the room without a cloth. there are four porcelain cups on it, one at each quarter, with a little dried sediment in the bottom of each. the saucers are absent.
there are no chairs, no kettle, no tray, no sugar. the cups are the same pattern but two have small chips in different places. nothing else is in the room — no clock, no rug, no second door, no notice on the wall.
the keeper supposes four people met here for some quiet purpose, drank what was offered, and stood the cups down before leaving. the keeper does not move the cups. the keeper has never moved the cups.
field-note: the residue in each cup is a slightly different shade. all four cups were drunk from. none of them was finished.
