the attic blue

when: dusk, late october· where: small dormer window· colour temp: 8500 K

the attic blue is the colour of the sky as the sky stops being a colour. through the small dormer it reaches about four feet into the room and no further. beyond its reach the attic is simply the attic, as it has always been.

it reveals the back of the trunk, the lid of a tin, the curve of a chair leg you had forgotten was up here. things made of metal answer it. things made of wool do not. it does not, in any case, ask much of them.

it hides the difference between things you meant to keep and things you forgot to throw away. it makes the attic kind. it is gone in twenty minutes. compare dusk and the dawn grey, which are cousins.

field note · the upper room the blue persists longer in winter, when the sky is thinner. in summer it is shorter, more violet, and reaches almost to the eaves. see also dormer edge.
